Fran and I are having a great time on vacation with the kids . . .
T minus 10 days and counting!
Today (Sunday) will be the last day of the week-long lunar new year celebration across China, Taiwan, and much of Asia. Everyone will return to work tomorrow. We have also enjoyed a much slower week than normal and it felt good! In case you missed it, 2010 is the year of the Tiger.

The past couple of weeks, and especially the last couple of days, have been awesome – weather-wise. Fall is definitely in the air in Taipei. We’ve tried to get outside every chance we get. Weekend before last we went on a bike ride. It started out to be a short outing just to get some fresh air but it turned into a 4 hour ride.
Taipei uses a fairly large river for water management and it runs close by our neighborhood. All along the river they have developed the flood plain into parks joined by a bike trail that follows the river. It was really nice. We rode the trail from our neighborhood south to the end of the trail. It was late and we were tired at the end so we pedaled to the nearest subway station and took the lazy way home

For the last two Sundays we have had a new small group meeting in our apartment on Sunday afternoon. The core group is made up of former University of Texas at Dallas students. They are bringing some of their friends and it looks like the make up of the group will vary from week to week. The first week we just introduced ourselves and talked a little. Last Sunday we talked about love. Oh yeah, did I mention that we are only speaking English (not their 1st language) and will use the Bible for the source of what we will be talking about.
Anyway, last week, after a good time of sharing about love we went to a noodle and dumpling shop for some dinner and then some of us hopped on a bus. We went to the Deaf Olympics venue and watched most of a basketball game. It was a fun night and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. (Photos are HERE)

Pardon my nostalgia . . . . at one point in the discussion about love we were asked what popped into our mind when we hear the word love. I thought of “Hippies”, which lead to “Peace and Love”, then to “Woodstock” (I guess the recent 40th anniversary had something to do with that). Except for my wife, no one admitted to knowing what Woodstock was! I must be getting really old! In honor of LOVE and the best era of Rock & Roll music ever, I offer the following song which is certainly not a theological statement – but it IS a feel good song:
I’ve been a bachelor for a week now so I have been taking care of things that I don’t normally have to do. Anyway . . . . The typhoon came and has left. Our hometown, Taipei, was barely bothered. Lots of rain and some gusty winds was about all we got. No street flooding at all. However, the south part of the island was not as fortunate. Many of you have already heard the news. The first link below has some really good coverage of the typhoon’s path through the Philippines, Taiwan, and on into China. It also has some really good photos. (HT to Amanda)

The only good news is that the water reservoirs in Taiwan that were almost empty are now all full.
